Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) – In order to maintain healthy relations between Christians and Muslims, the leaders of both religions should be oriented towards peace, tranquil coexistence, to overseeing and solving conflicts, said Archbishop Boniface Lele of Mombasa, in his address at a conference on Islamic-Christian relations in Africa, held in Heythrop, Great Britain.
The Archbishop of Mombasa, where the population is largely Muslim, highlighted that thanks to positive work relations between Christians and Muslims, many inhabitants – both Christian and Muslim – receive healthcare, water, and education, through common programs managed by the two communities.
Archbishop Lele recalled that there are still several questions to be resolved regarding Islamic students in Catholic schools, and expressed his opinion that there is a need for greater coordination among Catholics working in interreligious dialogue, which should be inspired by love for God. “We should be witnesses to the universal love of God. After all, people of every cultural and religious position are made in God's image,” the Archbishop of Mombasa concluded. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 3/11/2009)
