EUROPE/ITALY - Tumours caused by virus can be prevented

Tuesday, 18 May 2004

Rome (Fides Service) - 8.5% of tumours affecting people in industrialised countries and about 30% of those diagnosed in developing countries can be attributed to viruses. For example the Human Papilloma Virus HPV involved in producing cancer of the uterus, Epstein-Barr virus in some lymph nodes, herpes 8 (HHV-8) in the Kaposi sarcoma, the virus of hepatitis B and C in tumours of the liver bladder and colon, Helicobacter in the gastric tumour. It is important to realise that prevention of some tumours passes by control of these infections.
This will be the subject of a National Meeting for experts in various fields organised by the Italian Higher Institute of Health 19 and 20 May in Roma. (AP) (18/5/2004 Agenzia Fides; Righe:13; Parole:132)
