AMERICA/PERU - Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte reelected as President of the Bishops' Conference at the start of the Plenary Assembly

Wednesday, 21 January 2009

Lima (Agenzia Fides) – The 93rd Plenary Assembly of Peruvian Bishops, which will last until January 23, opened on January 19 with a Mass concelebrated by all the Bishops of Peru. The Mass took place at 9am, in Saint Anthony of Padua Parish, presided by Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos, President of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference, who in his homily mentioned that the Lord invites us to renew our lives and open our hearts to God. “The lack of authenticity is what detracts from man's dignity. Our identity is in life. We are a sacrament of life, our charism is life, and with the grace of God we should seek to live this in a conscientious manner. As disciples of Jesus, we need to reinforce the awareness that we are a sacrament of life, sign of life in Christ,” he said.
After the Mass, the Bishops began their 93rd Plenary Assembly. During the first session yesterday, Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte of Trujillo was reelected President of the Bishops' Conference for the three-year term of 2009-2012. Elected as Vice-President of this institution was Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, Archbishop of Lima; and elected as “second” Vice-President was Bishop Salvador Piñeiro García–Calderón, Military Bishop of Peru.
During the encounter, as is the tradition every year, the Gold Medal of Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo will be presented to the new Emeritus Bishops and the people and institutions who have been outstanding in their work for the Church in Peru. There will also be an evaluation of the work and activities carried out by the Peruvian Bishops' Conference and its entities during 2008. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 21/1/2009)
