Incheon (Agenzia Fides) – The John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Marriage and the Family hopes to open a Korean campus, which is why it has recently begun a Diocesan Center in the Catholic University of Incheon. It is the first step on the road to the 2009 erection of the Institute in Korea.
The Diocese of Incheon is pleased to receive the Institute’s request to work in Korea, where the Church is very active in the area of bioethics and subjects related to marriage and family.
Father Joseph Cheong Kwang-wung, of the Diocese of Incheon, was named President of the Preparatory Committee that will oversee the details, the leadership, and technical, administrative, and pastoral aspects of the Institute, working as a mediator between the Catholic and civil universities in the area.
In the opening ceremony of the Diocesan Center, which took place a few days ago, Monsignor Livio Melina, President of the John Paul II Institute in Rome, said “I hope that the Korean part of our Institute can soon become a light and a center for evangelization in northwestern Asia, playing an important role in the area.”
The Institute will be useful in forming pastoral agents, theologians, lay members of the Church, doctors, teachers, and catechists, as well as politicians, those working in volunteer work, and in other sectors of society. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 1/9/2008)
