Chia Yi (Agenzia Fides) – The Sisters of Our Lady of China (OLC) recently celebrated four important events: 68 years of their foundation of the Congregation; the 25th anniversary of the perpetual vows of Sister Liu Si Ting; the first temporal vows of 4 novices, among whom is a Vietnamese Sister who has an older sister already in the order; and the profession of 21 members of the lay branch of the Order, the “Apostles of Our Lady of China.”
According to a report from Christian Life Weekly, the weekly bulletin of the Archdiocese of Tai Pei, the new Bishop of the Diocese of Chia Yi, His Excellency Thomas Chung, celebrated Mass in the Cathedral in honor of these events and thanked the Sisters for their valuable service.
The Sisters of Our Lady of China was founded by the first Chinese (and first Asian) Cardinal, His Eminence Thomas Tian Geng Xin, SVD, then Apostolic Prefect for the Prefecture of Yang Gu (1938), in order to respond to the missionary needs of the Prefecture. The order was approved by Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi, then Prefect for the Congregation “Propaganda Fide,” in November of the same year. In December 1940, the first community began in the Diocese of Yang Gu, to imitate Our Lady’s spirit of “Fiat” in response to the Angel through their pastoral, health care, and education services, and their charism. The Order arrived in Hong Kong on May 12, 1949 and later went to Macao. In February 1952, it went to Taiwan. Over the years, the Sisters have spread and are now in various diocese on the island, as well as in Australia, to offer a pastoral service with the immigrants. It has also become an international Order, with aspirants from Vietnam, the Philippines... (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 06/06/2008)
