ASIA/HONG KONG - Diocese of Hong Kong celebrates 120th anniversary of the Cathedral: inauguration with a commemorative display

Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - Commemorate history and encourage Evangelization: this is the reason behind a commemorative display on exhibit for the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Cathedral of the Diocese of Hong Kong. The exhibit is entitled, “The Lord’s grace is everlasting; let us walk forward towards the future.” According to the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), the display that was opened April 5 is part of the many festivities taking place in honor of the 120th anniversary of the Cathedral dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. In the Solemn Mass for the celebration, the Bishop of Hong Kong gave thanks to the Lord for this splendid spiritual and artistic work and urged the faithful “to consider the inheritance left by our forefathers, in order to enrich our faith.” The diocese has organized various activities in commemoration of this important anniversary. On December 8, 1883, the Church of Hong Kong laid the first stone of the Cathedral. Five years later, it was consecrated and inaugurated as the new Cathedral. In 2003, it won the UNESCO award for the protection of cultural patrimony.
The display is divided into five main parts: a Brief History of the Cathedral and its Architecture, Liturgical Life, Charity Services, Vocations, and Evangelization. “More than a mere commemorative collection of the diocesan history, its main purpose, above all, is to focus on the mission of the faithful,” said organizers, mentioning that as of today, 16 schools have already registered for a guided tour.
