AMERICA/URUGUAY - The Church in Uruguay declares itself a permanent mission

Wednesday, 9 April 2008

Florida (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of Uruguay (the CEU) have issued a statement at the close of their Plenary Assembly (April 2-8) on the themes discussed during the meeting.
The document on Pastoral Guidelines 2008-2013 was presented by Monsignor Francisco Barbosa, National Coordinator of Pastoral Ministry. The guidelines were compiled with participation from all the dioceses and approved by the CEU in the Assembly held in November 2007. The main argument in the text is that the Church of Uruguay, in a country “threatened by growing fragmentation, disrespect for life and a lack of solidarity,” declares itself to be a permanent mission. This challenge will be met with 4 main events: the official presentation of the Pastoral Guidelines in the diocesan celebrations on Pentecost, with a strong missionary spirit; the official opening of the Continental Mission at the Third American Missionary Congress (CAM 3) on August 17 in Quito (Ecuador); the celebration of the feast of La Virgen de los Treinta y Tres, with emphasis on the missionary dimension; and to focus on the missionary life of the Apostle Saint Paul during this, the Pauline Year.
Sociologist Cesar Aguiar gave a talk on “Religion, Society, and Culture in Uruguay in the 21st Century,” showing the dates and interpretations of the various aspects regarding religion in Uruguay. From there comes the need to make the Living Christ known to greatest number of believers in God who still do not know Him and to offer formation to the many baptized who do not practice or live their faith.
The Bishops also discussed the topic of the faith of the youth. Monsignor Heriberto Bodeant, President of the National Committee for Youth Pastoral Ministry, spoke on the group that will attend the WYD in Sydney, Australia. He also reported on the National Youth Day in Tacuarembo, an event that attracts thousands of youth and that this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. The Youth Day will begin September 6 with the theme, “With Jesus, Mission and Life in Abundance” and will offer the youth a chance to do missionary work in various neighborhoods.
There has also been a proposal made for new guidelines for educational ministry, in the context of a new education law that is underway, along with reforms and drafts being made on the theme of sexual education. Regarding social progress, Monsignor Julio Bonino, President of the Department for Social Pastoral Ministry - Caritas, revealed a new plan of action for coordinating work in the area of social progress and response to natural disasters and other emergency situations, that the Department carries out together with Caritas.
The Bishops also considered it wise, in light of the country’s situation, that they reiterate and spread the previously issued declarations and documents on the defense of life and the family, and the necessary and healthy education on human sexuality.
They also spoke on the Synod on the Word of God that will be held in Rome. A delegation will be sent formed by Monsignor Orlando Romero, accompanied by Daniel Kerber, expert. And the central themes for the ad limina visit of the Bishops in September were also finalized.
During the Assembly, the Bishops also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Bishop Daniel Gil’s consecration as Bishop of Tacuarembo. Bishop Gil is now Emeritus Bishop of Salto. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 9/4/2008; righe 44, parole 548)
