Hong Kong (Fides News Agency) – In view of the Diocesan Assembly on Synodality, scheduled for February 2027, the Diocese of Hong Kong will officially launch its “synodal journey” on Saturday, 19 September. According to Kung Kao Po, the weekly newspaper of the Diocese of Hong Kong, the diocesan group coordinating the synodal journey recently took part in a meeting organized by the body responsible for promoting synodality within the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC). The meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 1 to 3 September.
The gathering brought together groups engaged in studying and promoting synodality from 21 ecclesial contexts across Asia. It opened with a creative activity entitled “The synodal journey begins with friendship”, emphasizing that walking together is not merely a matter of Church meetings and structures, but first and foremost springs from encounter among people, mutual listening and closeness in Christ.
The Bangkok meeting encouraged participants not to exhaust themselves in the search for quick answers, catchy formulas, programs or action plans. Instead, they were urged to remain rooted in prayer and to make time for listening and communal discernment, seeking to recognize how the Lord is guiding the local Churches towards the fulfilment of his will.
The Hong Kong diocesan working group shared its recent experiences of the synodal journey, while also reflecting on a number of particularly significant initiatives and the pressing needs that had given rise to them.
Looking ahead to the future of the synodal journey, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, Chairman of the FABC Commission on Synodality, encouraged groups working in different local contexts to discern the silent and discreet work of the Holy Spirit, recognizing the “greater things” that God is accomplishing in the Church and in society. He also urged them to renounce the desire to control the results and to remain open to the action of the Holy Spirit.
