Kathmandu (Fides News Agency) – “I have just visited one of the main areas where many people were swept away by the water; among them was a school with 300 students. We are still shocked, and people are traumatized. But we are close to them through prayer and solidarity.” This is what Father Silas Bogati, Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate of Nepal, told Fides upon returning from a humanitarian mission.
“Caritas Nepal has distributed aid in several locations and is running shelters for displaced people, with particular attention to children who have been left alone. These centres welcome all minors affected by the floods,” he reports.
Father Silas Bogati concludes: “We are responding to the emergency and are concretely present alongside those who are suffering and those in need. Alongside material assistance, our mission is to bring consolation.”
Together with the Executive Director of Caritas Nepal, Sr. Cecilia Durga Shrestha, Father Bogati visited the flood-affected areas of Trisuli (Nuwakot) to assess the damage and gain a clearer understanding of the situation of the families affected.
During the visit, they also went to reception centres currently hosting displaced families. Caritas Nepal is currently supporting three reception centres and eight “child-friendly spaces” in Nuwakot, providing essential assistance, shelter and protection to children and families.
Father Bogati and Sr. Durga Shrestha also met with Caritas staff, animators and volunteers, as well as local partners, to assess the situation together and identify the needs and challenges being faced at the centres. The spirit guiding those involved in the humanitarian response, they said, is to “stand alongside the affected families and children, offering them support, care and dignity.”
