AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - A new beginning for the Catholic Church: Father Christian Carlassare is ordained bishop in Rumbek

Rumbek (Agenzia Fides) - Almost a year after the dramatic attack in which he suffered serious injuries (armed men broke into his bishop's house on the night of April 25-26, 2021), Bishop Christian Carlassare returns to Rumbek, South Sudan , where he was ordained bishop today, March 25. The ceremony of episcopal consecration, which was supposed to take place in May 2021, had to be postponed due to the long rehabilitation therapy that the Comboni Missionary had to go through. Today's episcopal ordination is therefore a kind of personal rebirth and a new beginning for the diocese and for the entire Catholic Church of South Sudan, which was severely affected by this tragic event.
On the sidelines of a meeting with the Pope on the eve of the episcopal ordination, on March 14, 2022, Bishop Carlassare, the youngest Italian bishop (44 years old), told Fides: "I start again with calm and confidence. The most serious fears were the inner ones: we Italians, Westerners, are perhaps not used to these situations of uncertainty and precariousness. It is important to have trust and confidence, because only in this way fears cannot prevail and exert their power that blocks a person and does not make you go forward" (...)
