ASIA/SRI LANKA - Appointment of the New Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies

Vatican City (Fides News Agency) – On March 31, 2026, Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization (Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches), has appointed, Father Nayagam Roy Clarence, of the Diocese of Kandy, as Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Sri Lanka, for a five-year period (2026-2031).
The new Director of the PMS was born in 1977 and ordained in 2006. He obtained a Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Ph.) and a Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) in Rome, and subsequently obtained an advanced master's degree in Theology and Religious Studies (Dogmatic Theology) from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium (2012-2014).
He was assistant parish priest in Nawalapitiya and at Kandy Cathedral (2006-2007) and parish priest in Gampola (2007-2012), Ampitiya (2014-2019) and Ragala (2019-2021).
He has held the following pastoral roles: Diocesan Director of the Apostolate of Migrants (2008-2012), of the Laity and Family, and of Interreligious Dialogue (2008-2012, 2015-2020), Director of the National Catholic Commission for the Laity (2015-2019), Chaplain for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (2015-2019), Chaplain for Sri Lankan Migrants in the United Arab Emirates (2021-2026), and Lecturer at the Ampitiya National Seminary in Kandy (2015-2021).
