Pourcine Pic-Makaya (Agenzia Fides) – "After more than two years, a container of relief supplies from the capital, Port-au-Prince, has arrived, which had been stuck in our hospital in Port-au-Prince for a long time," writes Father Massimo Miraglio, a Camillian missionary who has been working on the island for almost twenty years, referring to a container destined for the capital, Jérémie.

"The truck left the capital on Friday afternoon, August 15, and arrived in Jérémie in the late afternoon of Monday, August 18. In total, it is 290 km from Port-au-Prince to Jérémie! The travel time says a lot about the difficulty of the route," explains Father Massimo, who has been parish priest of Our Lady of Help in the village of Pourcine Pic-Makaya, in the mountainous hinterland of Jérémie, since 2023.
"Unfortunately, the travel costs are very high due to the bandits who occupy the capital and the surrounding areas."

"This is very useful material, which arrives from Italy and was sent by the NGO 'Camilliana Madian Orizzonti Onlus' thanks to the donations of many people who support us," adds the missionary. "Thanks to the priests of Port-au-Prince who loaded the truck, thanks to 'Madian Orizzonti' for sending us the aid, and thanks to the many friends who support us in many ways!"

At the end of the Angelus prayer on Sunday, August 10, Pope Leo XIV also recalled the plight of the Haitian population and the nine people who were kidnapped by an armed group on Sunday, August 3, from an orphanage outside the capital. "The situation of the Haitian population, however, is becoming increasingly desperate. There are repeated reports of murders, violence of all kinds, human trafficking, forced displacement, and kidnappings," the Pope said. "I make an urgent appeal to all those responsible for the immediate release of the hostages and ask the international community for concrete support in creating social and institutional conditions that will allow Haitians to live in peace."
