NEW YEAR MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE KENYA EPISCOPAL CONFERENCE - Saturday, January 04, 2003
In our Christmas message, we appealed to all Kenyans to enhance peace during the festive season and especially during the Election Day and to exercise the right to vote wisely and peacefully, with calm and maturity.
We thank God for all that has happened in our country during and after the historic general elections that have just been concluded. We would also like to thank all the Kenyans for having been able to stand up to the challenge of this period and for voting peacefully. We maintained our calm and patience even as we waited for the official announcement of the winner by the Electoral Commission - we have been able to go over this hurdle in a peaceful and mature way.
The Kenya Episcopal Conference takes this opportunity to congratulate all the winners of the just concluded general elections. We congratulate our newly elected President, His Excellency Mwai Kibaki and wish him good health and success in all the tasks that lie ahead of him and his new government. We promise him our continued prayers and support. We would also like to congratulate all the Members of Parliament elected to the ninth parliament. They have an important role to play in the revival of this nation and we hope that they shall ensure that Kenyans receive what is good by working for the common good of the people of Kenya. Our congratulations also go to the elected civic leaders who have the responsibility and restoring the lost glory to our municipal and city councils.
We cannot forget to appreciate and congratulate the losers for accepting their defeat gracefully and peacefully. By conceding defeat, they have made it possible for this honourable nation to have a smooth and peaceful transition. In particular, we would like to recognize the role played by the retired president, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi for handing over power to the new president in a peaceful manner.
The time for politicking and campaign is now over. With a new government in place, we appeal to all Kenyans to settle down to the difficult task of rebuilding our nation. The new government requires our support, patience and co-operation to be able to realize the pledges made and eagerly awaited by Kenyans. We also hope that the new government shall work in close co-operation with the other regional leaders to put Kenya back to its lost glory regionally as well as internationally.
Once again, we would like to thank all Kenyans and ask for their patience and co-operation in the trying times ahead of us. It is paramount that each one of us is aware and ready to play their part, now that we have put in a government of our choice.
God Bless our Beloved and New Kenya!
A PROSPEROUS 2003 TO ALL KENYANS
Most Rev. John Njue
Chairman, Kenya Episcopal Conference
