JOINT MORAL MESSAGE DURING THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADHAN 1423 H AND ANTICIPATING THE ADVENT SEASON AND CHRISTMAS 2002

During the holy month of Ramadhan 1423 H/2002 and in anticipation of the Advent season and Christmas 2002, the members of the Indonesia National Moral Movement wish to take this opportunity to critically comment on the nation's problems after the Bali bomb attack on October 12, 2002.
We see the Bali bomb attack on October 12, 2002 as the climax of terrorist actions that have intimidated society and the Indonesian people. It is a humanitarian calamity that displays the existence of terrorism in Indonesia.
The image of the Indonesian people has diminished in the eyes of the international community and achieved a new name as a nest of terrorism in Southeast Asia. If that is the case, Indonesia has already become a victim of terrorist operations.
In this situation, we are increasingly aware that we, as a nation seriously require a ceaselessly growing strength of the spirit of unity and oneness. All of us must be strong in facing any powers, either from outside or inside that aspire to destroy our nation.
Because of that, we wish to proclaim the following moral messages:
1. Terrorism and terrorist actions are an evil attack on humanity. Therefore, we firmly repudiate them.
2. However, we also firmly refuse to accept if the terrorism that has assailed various parts of the world, including Indonesia, is tied to religions or particular groups. We believe that no religion teaches violence or terrorism towards others.
3. We support the government's efforts through its law enforcers to confront those terrorist actions without prejudice. However, we suggest that in their actions they always give attention to human rights.
4. We urge the government to assertively act against every form of radicalism that tends towards violence and endangers humanity and the wholeness of the nation's life.
5. We appeal to the whole nation to dissociate from terrorist dispositions and actions. Let us give an opportunity for the enforcement of law, justice, and truth.
6. To the government of the United States under the leadership of President George W. Bush, we request that in attacking international terrorism, the more fundamental global problems, i.e. injustice and international relations in all fields, receive serious attention. We appeal to the governments of the world to work together, both regionally and internationally to realize a more just world order.
7. We appeal to international society, particularly those that control the flow of mass media, that they not be trapped in directly or indirectly forming opinions that identify terrorism with specific religions or groups. We offer blessings and peace to our Moslem sisters and brothers during the fasting of the holy month of Ramadhan and to our Christian sisters and brothers during the Advent season and Christmas celebration.
