| Leprosy in the world
(1985 – 2002): the situation is calculated to the last day
of every year, the number of patients registered for treatment for
Leprosy. This figure depends on the length of the treatment. If
it is long the person is registered for more time. The decrease
in the past ten years is due to the gradual shortening of the treatment.
Until 1992, treatment lasted 3 years; until 1998, it was almost
2 years; today it can vary from 1 day to 12 months. It has been
proposed to reduce treatment to 6 months and this could reduce the
numbers in coming years.

New cases of leprosy: the exact number is unknown
so we calculate diagnosed cases (this means many cases remain hidden
or diagnosed late).
