MEDICINE - LEPROSY |
| DOSSIER FIDES NEWS SERVICE |
Treatment for leprosy consists of three elements: elimination
of the mycobacterium with antibiotics rifampicina, clofazimina and
dapsone. Combinations of these are given for periods varying from
six months to two years. The second aspect is to treat leproreaction
and neuriti. Prednisolone and thalidomide are useful according to
the type and gravity of lepro-reaction, to prevent damage to peripheral
nerves. The third aspect is curing complications which occur when
the nervous system is damaged: for example treatment of wounds, physiotherapy
and rehabilitation.
All three aspects of therapy depend on parallel health education without
which therapy may fail to be effective. |
