LINK MEDICINE - LEPROSY
“Lepers are images of God, who loves them and has redeemed them through the blood of his Son Jesus Christ””
Card. Barragán in a message to Bishops delegates for health >>
On the occasion of the 51st World Day of Solidarity with Lepers, Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, President of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Health care workers and the Sick addressed a message to Bishops delegated for Pastoral Care of Health by their respective Bishops’ Conferences and to all engaged in the fight against leprosy.
In the message the Cardinal mentions the work of the Church and the support it receives from the World Health Organisation. “The Catholic Church makes every effort to heal lepers and remove the psychological and social barriers which they encounter”.
Referring the WHO plan to treat leprosy the President confirms what is said by the Organisation, that this disease today, if treated at the outset, can be controlled and cured by a robust six month therapy with the forecast that these times will soon be shorter. Scientific research, pharmaceutical treatment, improved hygiene and medical conditions will eventually help to uproot this disease which has accompanied for many years the history of humanity.
“An excellent goal which we hope will be fully achieved at least at the centre of World Health. But in the outskirts, in those countries affected by the pandemic how is it lived?” the Cardinal asks. Particularly in 6 countries the main obstacle is the geographical covering of basic health units for “polychemiotherapy”. And in at least 4 other countries civil war causes serious damage to health structures. This is why Cardinal Barragan has great hope in the plan sponsored by WHO although it demands openness and intelligence to learn and understand in local communities and the training of health workers to face the new situation and capable of using the latest effective therapy and at the same time mature attitudes of acceptance towards those who still suffer today. .
