Born in Gijón, Spain in 1913, Luis Ruiz entered
the Jesuit Novitiate in Salamanca in 1930. In 1931 he was sent to
Belgium. In 1937 he went to Cuba to study Magisterium. In 1941 he
was sent on mission to China. Ordained a priest in 1945, from 1948
to 1950 he was on mission at Anking which was occupied by the Communists
in 1951. He was put in prison where he contracted typhoid and was
sent to hospital in Shangha. In October of the same year he was
expelled from China. In November he went to Macao where he recovered
and convinced the local authorities to give him a church for mainland
refugees. In 1952 in poverty stricken Macao he started organising
assistance for refugees. He taught religion at Casa Ricci and opened
a Caritas centre Macao. In 1969 China declared Macao a Chinese territory
and consequently all the refugees became illegal residents. In 1970
he opened three homes for old people and one for people with mental
disabilities. In 1976 he began to organise humanitarian assistance
for boat people from Vietnam. In 1985 he returned to China to help
earthquake victims and started working with lepers in Guangdong
province. In 1992 he visited lepers in the southern Chinese province
of Yunnan y Sicuani. In 2002 he retired from the direction of Caritas
to devote himself entirely to the care of lepers in China. (AP)
