New Delhi (Fides Service) - Caritas India in front line to rebuild homes after the December 26 tsunami which affected south east Asia, including India, has completed the first batch of new homes in the archdiocese of Verapoly, in Kerala. The new homes are for fishermen and their families who can now resume normal life and their fishing livelihood.
Among those present at the ceremony for handing over the new homes, the chairman of Caritas India Fr. John Noronha, Archbishop Acharuparambil of Verapoly and civil authorities. Fr Noronha said that in agreement with the local government, Caritas offered to build 750 new homes in the area. However Caritas Indian intends to build a total number of 15,000 homes for tsunami victims in various states particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The local authorities expressed appreciation to the Caritas and Catholic volunteers helping to build the homes. Caritas stressed the need to continue aid efforts for the seaquake victims in this stage of rebuilding and resettling.
