ASIA/TURKEY - Christians of all confessions are praying for the Pope who is greatly esteemed by all in Turkey: national media give continual updates on the Pontiff’s condition

Istanbul (Fides Service) - The people of Turkey, mostly Muslims, but also Christians of various confessions, are anxious about the health condition of Pope John Paul II. Christians gather in prayer and national media keeps the nation informed of the Pope’s health.
Father Eleuterio an Italian Franciscan stationed in Istanbul describes the situation. “We are following the situation closely. Special prayers were offered for the Pope at our Santa Maria church in Draperis, Istanbul yesterday and today. Catholics and other Christians all over Turkey are praying for the Pope. We are organising an ecumenical prayer meeting with our Orthodox and protestant brothers and sisters for 8 March and this will also include prayers for the Pope. People in Turkey hold the Pope in high esteem: Christians see him as one who has promoted Christian unity and Muslims also admire him”.
“National media here are giving ample space to the Pope’s condition and they are also asking the usual question of whether he will resign. For my part, I think that as he suffers from old age and infirmity the Pope is a sign that God’s wisdom is greater than the wisdom of the world. His example, as he accepts suffering, is an example for all Christians in the world and indeed for all men and women. In fact the Holy Father is respected and esteemed by all”.
