AFRICA/LIBERIA - “More financial transparency or aid will stop”: World Bank issues stern warning to Liberia’s interim government

Monrovia (Fides Service)- The World Bank issued a serious warning to Liberia to take steps to prevent corruption and show more financial transparency. This emerged after a visit to Monrovia by Shengman Zhang World Bank management director. “The World Bank and donor countries want to see more progress and more decisive action on the part of the government in the field of reconstruction of structures, good management in public administration and anti-corruption measures”.
Liberia is still struggling after a cruel civil war which ended in 2003. The interim government is made up of three groups which fought each other for control of the country from 1999 to 2003: former supporters of deposed President Charles Taylor and representatives of two rebel movements LURD (Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy) and MODEL (Movement for Democracy in Liberia).
The World Bank is at the centre of international efforts to help reconstruction in Liberia, having sponsored a meeting of donor countries last year in New York to collect 520 million dollars for Liberia. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 22/2/2005 righe 20 parole 209
