ASIA/PAKISTAN - Radio Veritas programmes in Urdu are a point of reference and encounter for peaceful co-existence in Pakistan

Lahore (Fides Service) -Radio Veritas programmes in Urdu broadcast in Pakistan are a highly appreciated source of information on the Catholic Church in Pakistan and its services to promote peace, respect for human rights and minority rights, social harmony and respect for human life through a culture of life. This emerged from a recent meeting organised by Radio Veritas producers and journalists with listeners of various ages groups and religious beliefs and from various parts of the country, representatives of families and associations.
Addressing the meeting, Archbishop Lawrence Saldanha, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan and head of the Bishops Media Commission, said: “We will continue to promote a culture of respect for life and for the values of justice and peace”.
Radio Veritas in Urdu, the country’s official language, has become a point of reference for all Catholic media in Pakistan. Its programmes are appreciated by Christians and Muslims alike and it has the full support of the country’s Bishops.
The programmes, broadcast from 6.30am to 7.30pm, focus on social themes, literature, news, religious and information, ethical questions, all aimed at spreading a message and a culture of peace.
It provides special feature programmes focus on Independence Day, Christmas and Easter as well as a programme for the Muslim feast of Id-Al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan, much appreciated by Muslim listeners.
As part of future commitments, Radio Veritas Urdu intends to give more space to topics regarding women and children, as well as inter-religious Christian/Muslim dialogue with debates and discussions. It also intends to update structures and equipment to improve its service, and to exchange views with other broadcasters Pakistan in view of establishing enriching sharing among media operators.
