Rome (Fides Service)-The humanitarian crisis in the western Sudan region of Darfur is still at the centre of international attention. While in Abuja, Nigeria, talks between representatives of the Sudanese government and representatives of the guerrilla groups fighting in Darfur continue, the United Nations’ Security Council has said it will hold a meeting in Africa to discuss the situation in Sudan. Next month instead of meeting at its New York head quarters, the supreme body of the UN organisation will meet in Nairobi capital of Kenya. The 15 members of the Council unanimously approved a resolution promoted by the United States sanctioning a decision to hold a Security Council meeting in Nairobi to try to increase efforts to restore peace in Sudan.
The aim of the Meeting is to identify solutions for the civil war in southern Sudan and for the humanitarian crisis in the western Sudanese region of Darfur, where an estimated 70,000 people have been killed and one million forced to abandon their homes to escape attacks by Arab militia thought to be backed by the government of Khartoum.
