VATICAN - “The Communications Media at the service of Understanding between Peoples”: Pope John Paul II has chosen the theme of the Church’s 2005 World Communications Day

Vatican City (Fides Service) - Presenting the theme chosen by Pope John Paul II for World Communications Day 2005 “The Communications Media at the service of Understanding between Peoples” Archbishop John P. Foley, President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications said this choice reflects the Holy Father’s hope that the media will promote authentic dialogue and reciprocal knowledge in order to foster understanding, justice and lasting peace”.
World Communications Day, the only world day started by the Second Vatican Council (Inter Mirifica, 1963), is celebrated in almost all the countries of the world, as established by the local bishops, on the Sunday before Pentecost (next year 8 May 2005). The theme is usually announced on 29 September, the feast day of Archangels Michael, Rafael and Gabriel, the latter being the patron of radio operators.
Traditionally the Pope’s Message for the Day is made public on 24 January, the Feast of St Francis de Sales, patron saint of journalists. This gives bishops' conferences and diocesan media offices plenty of time to prepare local and national celebrations. (S.L.) (Agenzia Fides 29/9/2004 Righe 15; Parole 191)
