EUROPE/ITALY - National Mission opens today: first conference - “a changing world” - by Senegal’s minister of scientific research

Rome (Fides Service) - Some 1600 people have gathered for Italy’s 3rd National Mission Congress at Montesilvano, Pescara, 28-30 September on the theme “Communion and Co-responsibility for Mission”. The congress is one of the most important events this year for the Church in Italy. One of the goals is to help the Christian community, parishes in particular, to be more aware of the need to open to themes of universality, assuming mission as a paradigm for its pastoral activity.
The Congress will open this afternoon with welcoming address by Bishop Flavio Roberto Carraro of Verona who is President of the Italian Bishops’ Commission for Mission and Bishop Francesco Cuccarese of Pescara. The opening Mass with signs and gesture referring to the five continents will be presided by Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples and the first talk on ‘a Changing World’ will be given by Senegalese Minister of scientific research Christian Sina Diatta.
“At Montesilvano we are staking everything on communion and co-responsibility for mission - Mgr. Giuseppe Andreozzi, national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Italy and head of the Bishops’ National office for Missionary Cooperation. It will be a “laboratory” where we will make analysis and proposals to help the Church in Italy assume new responsibility for the evangelisation of people, drawing from mission those spiritual and pastoral energies which renew her in her ordinary work ”.
