AFRICA/CONGO RD - Confusion reigns in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the scene of fighting for the past few days

Bukavu (Fides Service)- The situation in Bukavu, in southern Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) where there has been fighting for some days now between troops loyal to the central government in Kinshasa and guerrillas. “Today 28 May the city awoke to hear shooting in several districts also less intense compared to days ago” the general house of the Xaverian Fathers told Fides. “It is difficult to have a clear picture of events because the roads are blocked by military and many parts of the city are without electricity and telephones are out of order”.
RCD-Goma (Congolese Union for Democracy), a pro-Rwanda guerrilla group which has controlled the area for a long time has asked the national unity government to restore order immediately in south Kivu and particularly in Bukavu.
“The UN peacekeeping mission MONUC continue operations to restore peace in Bukavu and perhaps there is a some result in the fact that fighting is less intense” the sources told Fides. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 28/5/2004, righe 20 parole 211)
