AMERICA/BRAZIL - Church in Brazil starts annual Lenten “Fraternity Campaign” to evangelise in a spirit of conversion, interior renewal and community commitment

Brasilia (Fides Service) - As the Season of Lent opens, the Church in Brazil embarks on its 40th “Fraternity Campaign which will be presented in Brasilia tomorrow, 25 February, Ash Wednesday at the head quarters of the Brazilian Bishops’ Conference CNBB.
Since it was started in 1963, the Fraternity Campaign “is a great activity of evangelisation during the Season of Lent to help Christians and all people of good will live authentic brotherhood and engage in concrete efforts to transform society starting with a specific problem which demands participation of all”( cf. Nature and History of the Fraternity Campaign CNBB). The Campaign is launched during Lent because it is a good means of prompting conversion, interior renewal and community activity as true penitence which God wishes us to undertake in preparation for Easter. In this sense it is “valid tool of evangelisation ” during Lent.
The theme of the campaign this year is “Fraternity and Water”, and the slogan is “Water Source of Life”. The aim of the 2004 campaign is “to increase awareness of the value of water, source of life, a need of all living beings and a right of every human person” in order to encourage people to work to guarantee present and future generations the right to water (cf. basic text of the Campaign 2004).
The Campaign is expressed concretely in the fraternal act of collections of solidarity taken on Palm Sunday in every Catholic diocese, parish, community school. The money collected will fund projects in favour of the most needy in society living in situations at risk.
In a note sent to Fides Father Daniele Lagni, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Brazil, said that the theme chosen for this year’s campaign fits well with a missionary life lived as proclamation of the good news of Jesus who wishes to be “life in abundance” for every man, woman and child. The slogan “Water, Source of Life” is therefore a call to fight to defend life, and in the light of the faith we can say that the source of our missionary commitment lies in the water of baptism when we were born to new life in Christ”.
As the campaign 2004 opens, the theme Fraternity Campaign 2005, has been chosen “Solidarity and Peace”. In 2005 the Churches in Brazil which belong to the National Council of Churches - CONIC (Catholic Apostolic, Roman, Reformed Church, Episcopal Anglican Church in Brazil, Lutheran Church, Methodist Church, Syrian Orthodox Church, United Presbyterian Church, Independent Presbyterian Church) will together lead a Fraternity Campaign to promote a decade devoted to overcoming violence.
