ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - TAEGU SEMINARY OPENS TO THE LAITY: THEOLOGY FOR HOUSEWIVES, WORKERS AND BUSINESSMEN

Taegu (Fides Service) – In response to the laity’s desire to learn more about the faith Taegu Seminary will open theology studies to the laity. The courses should commence in March 2004
The initiative has strong support from the Archbishop of Taegu, Archbishop Paul Moun-hi, after 800 lay people came to a highly successful Seminar on theological subjects promoted last year by the archdiocese. Thanks to a special “credit bank system” lay people, housewives, workers, business men can enrol for theology courses. The credit system allows applicants to take the courses as they can according to the time available, even over a number of years.
The Archbishop says that lay people must be helped to increase the knowledge of their faith and the credit system will be useful for many working people who cannot afford the time to enrol in a regular educational course of theology. Other seminaries in South Korea offer lay people and religious brothers and sisters undergraduate and graduate programmes on theology but they do not have a credit system of separate course from those taken by seminarians.
