ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - BISHOP ISSUES MESSAGE FOR WORKERS SUNDAY 2003

Seoul (Fides Service) - The worker is more important than money. This is one of the main points of a pastoral letter issued by Bishop Boniface Choi Ki San of In'chon diocese for Workers' Sunday celebrated on 27 April. In'chon diocese decided to mark Workers Sunday on the Sunday before May 1 when the world marks Labour Day and the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. The aim of Workers Sunday is to remember the dignity of work and workers and to establish mutual relations between managers, workers and trade unions.
In his message the Bishop refers to the social teaching of the Catholic Church. He also reaffirms the local Church's support for all workers in Korea, national and foreign, many of whom are deprived of their fundamental rights. "We need to rediscover the real value of work in society, and to adapt our point of view to the Gospel, the Bishop says. The Church has always taught that work is more important than capital and that the person is more important than money." (Fides Service 28/4/2003 EM lines 19 Words: 188)
