Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope John Paul
II has, (28 March 2003) appointed Bishop of Sunyani (Ghana) Reverend
Father Matthew Gyamfi, until now rector of the minor seminary
in Sunyani and chancellor of the diocesan curia.
The Bishop elect was born in 11 August 1957 in Wamanafo, Sunyani
diocese. He studied in Ghana and in Canada at Toronto University
obtaining a doctorate in geography. He was ordained a priest for
the diocese of Sunyani on 27 July 1985. He has since been: assistant
priest, parish priest, vice-rector and rector of the minor seminary
Sunyani, diocesan chancellor.
Sunyani diocese is a suffragan of the metropolitan See of Cape
Coast. It has an area of 30,500 sq. km., and a population of 1,610,000.
There are 167,000 Catholics gathered in 24 parishes, in the care
of 77 priests, (65 diocesan and 12 religious) assisted by 11 Brothers,
59 women religious and 42 major seminarians. (Fides Service 14/4/2003
