Ulaan Baator (Fides Service) - "We wholeheartedly respond
to the Pope's call for prayer and fasting for peace. As the representative
of the Catholic community in Mongolia I intend to make this an
interreligious prayer, calling not only other Christians to join
us but also followers of the other main religions here, Buddhists,
Muslims, Baha'i. We will all pray for peace together". Mgr.
Wenceslao Padilla, Prefect Apostolic of Ulaan Baator, said this
in an interview with Fides Service, when we asked him about his
reaction to Pope John Paul II's call, on Sunday 23 February, to
Catholics the world over to make Ash Wednesday March 5, a day
reserved for prayer and fasting to obtain from God the gift of
peace. Mgr Padilla says he is writing Pastoral Letter to the local
Catholics and to leaders of other religions in Mongolia to explain
the importance of the event and to encourage all believers to
turn to God at this moment of anxiety. "Only God can give
the gift of peace- he said - but we must help to build it"
