Canberra (Fides Service) - At this present time when "the people of Iraq and indeed the world stand on the precipice of another Gulf War" the Catholic Bishops of Australia have issued a comprehensive discussion guide entitled: "The Church speaks out on war and peace". The guide, produced by the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council, illustrates the point of view of Catholic doctrine, summarising briefly the teaching as given in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and gives excerpts from some of the most significant statements by the Pope, the Holy See, Catholic Bishops in various countries with regard to war. The purpose of the guide is to provide input for local communities, justice groups, and individuals who are seeking further information on the Church's pronouncements on war and peace.
