AMERICA/BRAZIL - ITALIAN VOLUNTEERS WILL OPEN CENTRE FOR 760 UNDERFED CHILDREN AND 500 FAMILIES IN NEED

Salvador de Bahia (Fides Service) - In one of the poorest areas of Salvador de Bahia, Novos Alagados in Brazil, Italian volunteers of AVSI, who have worked with the poor in Brazil for eight years, will soon open a new Children's Centre. The Centre will cover an area of about 1,000 square meters, and comprise two story buildings to house about 700 children, 60 adolescents and at least 500 families. The aim is to assist undernourished children aged 0-6 considering that 60% of children in shanty towns do not get enough protein and 90% have serious problems of disease caused by parasites. AVSI specialists will also provide counselling and treatment for adolescents, 7-16 years, in situations of risk due to family, social and environmental problems.
