New Delhi (Fides Service) - Despite spreading fundamentalism
which often attacks Indian Christians, the mayor of Delhi, Mrs
Sheila Dikshit recently praised Christian contribution to social
harmony made by the Bible Society Mission of India. The publishing
house has printed and distributed the Bible in India for the past
50 years. Speaking at celebrations for the 50th anniversary of
the establishment of the Bible Society Mission of India, the mayor
underlined that "the distribution of the Bible contributes
to the wellbeing of humanity." The Bible Society Mission
of India has its roots in the British Bible Society founded in
Calcutta in 1811. In those early years the Bible Society produced
the whole Bible in 59 Indian dialects and the New Testament in
234 dialects. The present Bible Society Mission of India was established
in 1953 and it continues the work translating Sacred Scripture
with the help of Protestant and Catholic Bible scholars. (Fides
