OCEANIA/TAHITI - MOBILISATION AGAISNT WAR:ARCHBISHOP COPPENRATH TAKES PART IN PEACE MARCH

Papeete (Fides Service) - On Saturday 15 March some 300 people took part in a peace march through the streets of Papeete organised by the Polynesian Committee for Peace in Iraq. The marchers walked along the sea front and then headed for the Presidency of French Polynesia to meet the high commissioner of France. The march was led by university students and high school pupils. Responding to questions by the local media, Archbishop Hubert Coppenrath, who took part in the peace march said: "I would not like my presence to be taken as a political action. I am not interested in who is marching. The Church is always fully committed to peace and to preventing war. Catholic Bishops all over the world have raised their voices in support of peace. The Pope is also doing everything he can." (Fides Service 17/2/2003 EM lines 11 Words: 147)
