Hanoi (Fides Service) - Catholic social work helps girls in Vietnam
to find work. Thanks to professional training courses run by Lovers
of the Holy Cross Sisters in Bin Dinh province, south of Hanoi,
hundreds of young women are able to find an occupation. The Sisters
teach young girls to embroider flowers, leaves, birds, and animals
on traditional Japanese kimonos and Koran costumes. Korean manufacturers
appreciate the detail and care of the work and also the complete
and punctual delivery. The Sisters train about 600 girls aged
16 and 17 in small rooms adjacent to the Cathedral Qui Nhon. Today
there are 273 Sisters, Lovers of the Holy Cross as well as 54
aspirants and 23 novices. The sisters also run remedial classes,
day-care centres and credit projects for poor women in Vietnam's
rural areas. (Fides Service 28/1/2003)
