Europe/Spain - Tragic situation of children calls for priority attention: Missionary Childhood Day in Spain

Madrid (Fides Service) - In view of Missionary Childhood Day (26 January in Spain), the national office of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Spain prepared a special dossier with information on the situation of children in the world and the help given by the Pontifical Mission Society for Missionary Childhood. According to the Dossier 149,000,000 children do not get enough to eat and 120,000,000 die of starvation; 12,000,000 do not go to school; 100,000,000 have no home, they live on the streets; 180,000,000 (aged 5 - 17), are forced to work. According to UNICEF 1,200,000 children are kidnapped or sold every year, and figures regarding sexuality exploited of children in different countries are as follows: India and Brazil 500,000; Thailand, Philippines and Taiwan 300,000, Vietnam and Sri Lanka 70,000; 300,000 are kidnapped and forced to fight in wars. With the US$ 14,823,696.03 collected in 2001, in 2002 Missionary Childhood International supported 638 projects in aid of children: 205 pre-school projects; 356 children pastoral; 26 missionary animation; 184 formation; 1,258 school projects.
