Rome (Fides Service) - Put an end to wars in Africa, resolve
the problem of international debts, fight AIDS, help refugees,
promote good government: these are some of the commitments requested
of Europe by Pax Christi, Caritas Europe and Cooperation International
for Development and Solidarity, in view of a Europe-Africa summit
scheduled for 4-5 April in Lisbon, capital of Portugal. In a statement
entitled "From Cairo to Lisbon: UE and Africa together for
a new partnership", the three Catholic organisations illustrate
a series of problems to be addressed to alleviate the suffering
of the African peoples. First of all action must be taken to find
solutions to the many conflicts, also with laws adopted by European
and African countries to guarantee greater financial transparency
in countries that trade with Africa. This will ensure that local
resources are no longer used to fund wars, but are instead employed
for the common good. Europe will be asked to commit itself to
providing sufficient assistance to Africa's millions of refugees
and displaced persons. To boost Africa's authentic development
the Organisations call on European and African government members
to commit themselves fully to promoting good governance and above
all to adopt fair trade regulations. This is necessary following
the introduction of the Euro which created an economic giant that
threatens to squash African economies completely. Europe is asked
to assign 0.7% of its domestic income to aid for Africa. LM (Fides
