Africa/Ivory Coast - Has the country reached a dead end?

Abidjan (Fides Service) - "For Ivorians honesty, integrity and justice seem to be values of another epoch". With this hard statement the Catholic Bishops of Ivory Coast denounce spreading moral deterioration all over the country, devastated by civil war since September 2002. "Money has become the criteria for recognition of human dignity. This is the origin of our divisions, including fractures in public institutions such as the army and political parties. Today people join a party not to follow an ideal or a particular development project, but for the economic benefits it offers". In the face of the civil war, the Bishops call on Ivorians to love one another and their country: "Let us learn to love one another; let us stop fighting and stop labelling people north, south, east, west. To love one's country means sharing a common ideal, giving first place always to national interests, over personal interests". See Bishops' Statement in French at www.fides.org (Fides Service 23/1/2003)
