Vatican City (Fides Service) - "The re-composition of unity
among all baptised Christians is, in fact, a gift that comes from
God, and our commitment to attain it is not sufficient, but when
Christians come together, find they are brothers, collaborate
to alleviate suffering and pray for unity, they help to reveal
the splendour of Christ's face and his glory". Before leading
the prayer of the Angelus on Sunday 19 January from his window
overlooking St Peter's Square, Pope John Paul II reminded those
present that this is the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
in the northern hemisphere. (In parts of the southern hemisphere
the Week is held around Pentecost. "The year the theme is
a Treasure in earthen vessels" taken from the 2nd Letter
of St Paul to the Corinthians, 4,7. <This treasure we possess
in earthen vessels to make it clear that its surpassing power
comes from God and not from us>. See
