Vatican City (Fides Service) - The positive role of religions
in building peace and a denouncing of "dishonest use of religion
for political ends", are highlighted in a message of encouragement
to the Bishops of Ivory Coast, a country struggling with civil
conflict that has already killed thousands, sent by Archbishop
Renato Martino, the newly appointed President of the Pontifical
Council for Justice and Peace. Mgr Martino, for years Holy See
Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York, writes in
support of initiatives of leaders of different religions in Ivory
Coast, including a message to the nation. Referring to Pope John
Paul II's Message for World Day for Peace 2003, the Archbishop
says he hopes "the various sides will examine their conscience
with regard to responsibilities and commitment to reach a cease-fire
and promote true peace founded on justice and forgiveness."
