Rome (Fides Service) - Schools in traditionally Christian Europe
are having to face the increasingly multi-cultural origin of pupils
as the continent receives a steady flow of immigrants of various
religions, Islam, Buddhism, African Religions etc. This is a challenge
to schools to be workshops of harmony, teaching co-existence in
respect and tolerance. A recent study written by Professor Flavio
Pajer, and published by the two weekly review Il Regno, Dehonian
Publishers, Bologna, deals with the various aspects of school
and religious instruction. Pressure from the world of Islam highlights
the need to address the theme of the unification of Europe which
brings together Christians of different tradition and calls for
school curriculum which provide a more articulated vision of Christianity
as well as other religions. Fides Service intends to open a debate
on the subject of school education for social harmony in Europe
and elsewhere. (Fides Service 16/1/2003)
