Kigali (Fides Service) - "On the list of 174 countries listed
according to development, Rwanda is number 162. Moreover 64% of
the people live below the poverty line. Rwanda has a population
of 8,343,000 with a birth rate of 3%, which means that in twenty
years time there will be about 15 million Rwandans living in an
area of 26,338 sq. km." This is said in a report on the economic
situation in Rwanda and the activity of the Catholic Church in
that country. To address the economic situation the government
has adopted a Plan to Reduce Poverty with the objective of bringing
the GNP per head from US$260 up to US$ 960 so that those below
the poverty line will drop from 64.1% to 25%, raise life expectant
from 49 to 65 and guarantee instruction for 90% of the population
compared to the 48% literate population today". The
