Africa/Rwanda - Government plans to eliminate poverty: special report

Kigali (Fides Service) - "On the list of 174 countries listed according to development, Rwanda is number 162. Moreover 64% of the people live below the poverty line. Rwanda has a population of 8,343,000 with a birth rate of 3%, which means that in twenty years time there will be about 15 million Rwandans living in an area of 26,338 sq. km." This is said in a report on the economic situation in Rwanda and the activity of the Catholic Church in that country. To address the economic situation the government has adopted a Plan to Reduce Poverty with the objective of bringing the GNP per head from US$260 up to US$ 960 so that those below the poverty line will drop from 64.1% to 25%, raise life expectant from 49 to 65 and guarantee instruction for 90% of the population compared to the 48% literate population today".
