Europe/Spain -Diplomats of 105 nations to plant symbolic olive tree for peace

Murcia (Fides Service) - In response to Pope John Paul II's repeated and heartfelt appeals for peace, the Centre for Voluntary work of the San Antonio Catholic University in Murcia, Spain, has organised a symbolic peace-building initiative involving Ambassadors in that country. The Centre has sent letters to 105 diplomats representing the same number of nations asking them to take part in a ceremony on March 1, at the university campus. The Ambassadors will witness the planting of an olive tree, brought especially for the occasion from Jerusalem, as a sign of commitment for peace for the whole world. The Ambassadors are asked to bring with them a kilo of soil from their respective country. All the soil together with serve as a bed for the new olive tree. The organisers hope this will be a way for "the tree of peace to take root in every nation". (Fides Service 15/1/2003)
