Luanda (Fides Service) - "At last after 25 years, Angola
is living Christmas in peace" Archbishop Giovanni Angelo
Becciu, Nuncio to Angola told Fides Service. "The situation
is still difficult especially for former rebel soldiers and their
families, who have been living in assembly camps since the peace
agreement reached this Spring. Some of the camps have been dismantled
because the people have returned to their villages. Resettlement
is complicated and the local Church is fully engaged in offering
assistance, food, clothing, other basic necessities, tools and
seeds. The aim is to help them become self-supporting. Everyone
is looking forward to Christmas in peace. The Christmas present
I would share with the rest of the world are the smiles on the
faces of a church-run centre for the disabled which I visited
recently. The smile on the faces of people, suffering deeply often
in mind as well as body, is truly a sign that God's love brings
light even to the darkest and most desperate places. (Fides Service
