Taipei (Fides Service) - Sixty years ago the first diplomatic
relations between the Holy See and the China were established.
An international convention to mark the anniversary was held at
the FeRen Catholic University in Taipei. Among the speakers Card.
Shan, Bishop of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Cardinal explained that
the today role of the Catholic Church in Taiwan is to be a bridge
between the Holy See and mainland China. He recalls the diplomatic
situation today and the delicate position of Taiwan. "In
this delicate position two principles are clear: the Holy See
is anxious to improve relations with the Peoples Republic of China;
The Holy See also has at heart the interests of Catholics in Taiwan
and will therefore never overlook the pastoral aspect which is
the distinguishing mark of Holy See diplomacy compared to others".
The Cardinal said by way of conclusion that as Bishop of Kaohsiung
he is committed to evangelisation on the Island and he assured
all present that the Church in Taiwan will continue to serve as
a bridge of solidarity and brotherhood towards mainland China.
