Africa/Democratic Congo - Details of the Pretoria peace agreement

Kinshasa (Fides Service) - The peace agreement reached in Pretoria (South Africa) was signed by president Joseph Kabila, the Group for Congolese Democracy (RCD) -Goma, and the Movement for the Liberation of Congo MLC and a delegation of the civil society. The agreement is that Kabila will remain president, flanked by four vice-presidents representing the signing parties. Key ministries Home, Defence, Foreign, are distributed among the government and the two rebel movements. This executive will be in power for two year followed by election for all parties. The agreement was reached thanks to the mediation of South Africa which has worked for years to restore peace in the Great Lakes region of Africa. (Fides Service 18/12/2002)
