Asia/India - Church assists tribal villagers struck by drought and hunger

Sabarkantha (Fides Service) - A Catholic parish in western India is working to ease the plight of tribal villagers in a drought hit area. Life is very difficult since severe drought reduced harvests to next to nothing. Father Peter D'Souza of Meghraj parish says his parish is doing its best to provide drought relief to the tribal villagers in the area. The parish is helping the people to build catchments for rainwater and supplying basic needs, also thanks to funds provided by Catholic Relief Services, an agency of the US Catholic Bishops. The Catholic Church in India has always had at heart the care of the most needy in remote areas. Tribal people are 15 percent of the overall population of 50 million in Gujarat state.
