America/Peru - President of Bishops Conference wins national human rights award

Lima (Fides service) - In Peru a Catholic Bishop has been awarded the national Angel Escobar Jurado prize for his activity in defence of human rights. On December 10 at Lima's Art Museum the prize was presented to Bishop Luis Bambaren Gastelumendi SJ, of Chimbote diocese for his "outstanding personal commitment in the struggle for social justice, respect for human rights and special attention for the most needy". Bishop Bambaren Gastelumendi was born on 14 January 1928, ordained a priest 1958 and has been a bishop since 1968. Since 1999 he is also president of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference.
