Dhaka (Fides Service) - Christ's message of peace will be given
ample space this year on state TV and radio in Bangladesh, a mainly
Muslim country where Christians are about 240,000 among a population
of 125,000,000. The Christian Community Centre, sponsored by the
Catholic Bishops of Bangladesh, is working on TV, radio and other
programmes to highlight the message of peace which the Christ
Child offers to the whole world. Some 100 Christians, Catholics
and Protestants are rehearsing and videotaping a programme to
be telecast on government run Bangladesh Television on Christmas
Day. Director of the Centre Father Kamal Corraya said the programme,
scheduled for 10.30pm, will consist of traditional Christmas hymns
as a background for clips of the many different charitable and
social services offered by the small Christian minority to the
people of Bangladesh. Peace is also the main theme in the special
Christmas issue of the national Catholic weekly Pratibeshi: writers
who contribute with essays, stories and poems have focussed on
"love and forgiveness for peace in society". Father
Kamal explained that in view of recent terrorist attacks both
in Bangladesh and overseas, peace is the deepest desire of everyone,
and Christians know that peace is a gift of God and it can only
be fostered by "forgiveness and love". (Source UCAN
